Hmm where to begin?

Last weekend I was in Louisville, at UofL for CTK (Come Together Kentucky), KY's annual GLBT conference. Needless to say I was quite surprised at the discrimination I, as well as my friends, faced. I thought Louisville, being a bigger city, would be more tolerant but I was sadly mistaken.

We were constantly harassed at the hotel by the guests, (I don't know what ever possessed the Galt House to schedule us along with a Jesus 2002 conference, a Campus Crusade For Christ conference, as well as a huge youth soccer group.) as well as many locals. While we walked to Connections (a local gay bar/club) people leaned out of their car windows and shouted "queer" and "faggot" at us. People point blank stared at us among other things. It was so bizarre. I don't even get that in Lexington!

The topper was when my friends and I stopped at a Waffle House on the way out of town. The waitress flat out refused to serve us because she knew we were gay. How fucked up is that?! I'm thinking ... "Is this Montgomery, AL circa 1962?” Totally fucked up. She got into an argument with her supervisor until she finally gave in. Mighty big of her indeed. Other things happed too but I'm not going to get wrapped up in it right now. It was my first major exposure to people's ignorance and fear. I've never been that blatantly discriminated against. Sobering and aggravating indeed...

The highlight of the weekend was getting to see Margaret Cho perform live. She was fucking fabulous!! She came to the closing of the conference and gave a very inspiring speech. Hearing the words of love she poured over us more than made up for all the shit that we encountered!
